сегодня: I was interested to read the responses to the last blog with regard to Pussy Riot…and like so many things, there are different views. Thanks to those of you who've been texting.
My take on it is this..
If the girls are being tried for creating public disorder in a church, then they are absolutely guilty..but..what really matters is whether the sentence fits the crime.
They didn't hurt anyone physically. Nothing was damaged or broken. What they did was certainly an act of provocation, but should that warrant a seven year jail sentence?
Not in my view, or the view of Amnesty International, who have supported human rights around the world for decades.
They are activists in a country with a long history of social and political oppression and revolution of different kinds.
They stage small/local/outrageous events to draw attention to their message, otherwise no one outside Moscow would know anything much about them.
Whatever you feel about their methodology, they've taken massive personal risks and done a great job of making the whole world know what's happening.
That is what makes their trial so interesting, and…so crucial for the longterm issue of freedom of speech in Russia.
The reason why all the journalists in court were applauding them is because the group have totally stuck their heads above the parapet, to go where few would ever dare.
If they are given a harsh sentence, it will be a clear sign that the iron fist rules, and will always be prepared to crush any fluttering butterfly.
If the sentence is more lenient, it will send out a more humanistic message that the power centre is able to take a more liberal view.
My hunch/hope is that the sentence will be reduced…but we'll only know next week.
